6 Decorating Trends of the 80s
Although they may seem remote, the 80s are present in different aspects of everyday life and interior design could not be an exception. Get to know the main interior design trends of that decade.
Some trends come and go almost unnoticed, while others seem to never disappear. That’s the case of the 80s, which always seems to be present in different professional (and even personal) areas of daily life.
This means that if you want to use some of the trends that we show you next, you can do so without the fear of looking "out of fashion" even because the 80s are back in force, mainly in interior design.
Tubular furniture is one of the most used trends in the 80s and is undoubtedly a
differentiating element in any room of a house; it was (and is) very common to
see this tubular effect in furniture such as sofas and armchairs, and the truth is
that these are still very sought after and used in decoration nowadays.
Speaking of furniture, let's also talk about the material in which it was (and is)
lined: velvet. Velvet is back in force and always adds a sophisticated touch to any
room in which it’s present. Velvet sofas (light or darker ones) are still one of the
biggest trends today.
2. . The golden elements
Gold, besides being associated with luxurious contexts, is one of the preferred
trends of the 80s. Even today, it is frequent to see furniture, such as the ones
used in the bathroom, with elements in gold (like it happens with drawers’
handles).
Gold is also widely used in mirror frames and in elements such as the sink, the
washbasin, and even in the taps themselves (whether we’re talking about the
kitchen or the bathroom).
Together with the golden elements, marble was widely used, not only on walls
but also on bathroom furniture. Even today, the trend remains present inside
several houses.
3. The bathrooms in pink tones
In the 80s, it was rare to enter a bathroom that was not decorated in shades of pink (not only on the walls but also on the chosen furniture). Even today, the decorative trend remains and is, at least, very original and different from the traditional white that most people choose to decorate their space.
The pink bathrooms are, once again, a famous trend, mainly because of the original and fun touch they give to any house. And to relate this trend to the one mentioned above, the truth is that the pink tones coexist very well with the golden elements.
4. Memphis style furniture
Do you know this kind of furniture? It looks like it came out of an animated movie,
but Memphis style furniture couldn't be more real. The combination of different
shapes and colors are two of its main characteristics and, despite being one of
the decoration trends of the 80s, this kind of furniture is still widely used in rooms
such as the living room and even kids’ toy room.
5. Glass bricks
Don't tell us that you only remember seeing walls in glass bricks in the 80s,
because we can't believe you. This is the trend that has withstood the years and
continues to be used both as an exterior and interior wall.
And the truth is that you understand perfectly why glass bricks continue to be
used as part of the decoration of the house (or even of professional spaces, such
as companies’ offices): the lighting they provide and the bold touch they give to
the decoration are advantages that cannot be ignored.
6. The floral patterns
A major decoration trend of the 80s that continues to be chosen nowadays is the
application of flower patterns on walls, in the form of wallpaper, or on furniture
such as sofas or armchairs. And yes, of course, this trend also applies to
cushions, one of the elements where flower patterns are most seen today.
We cannot deny that this is one of the most timeless trends of the 80s, which
remains current regardless of the years that pass. The floral patterns were
reinvented and adapted to more "modern" times.
There are more cyclical decoration trends than others and the ones from the 80s
are just tone of those examples. Regardless of the years that go by, the types of

furniture, colors, and materials used are timeless and do not compromise the
modernity of a division very much on the contrary, not least because they give
a unique and distinctive touch to any place.
