How to decorate your room in Scandinavian style

How to decorate your room in Scandinavian style

If you think about what best characterizes the Scandinavian way of life, you will quickly realize how to decorate your living room: with lightness, harmony, and the choice of clear and pastel tones.

The Scandinavian style is undoubtedly one of the most coveted when it comes to interior design. This is because, in addition to bringing harmony to space, it’s also capable of making it wider.

The Scandinavian style, when applied to interior design, ends up being a replica of these different countries’ population way of living. The concept of traditional decoration remains, but there is a great concern with the organization, colors, and materials chosen for each corner of the house.

If you're looking for a peaceful environment that gives you a feeling of peace every time you enter the house, then you're in the right place. Find out how you can decorate your room in the Scandinavian style.

1. Prefer minimalism

Minimalism is one of the most transverse trends nowadays the truth is that it has been like that for decades. "Less is more", this is the mantra you should keep in mind when decorating your living room with the Scandinavian style.

Of course, there are no set rules for decorating a space according to this style, but there are some practices you can follow to do so. Fewer decorative objects, fewer colors and a mix of materials is, therefore, a great starting point.

Choose only the furniture you really need. Don't buy decorative objects just for the pleasure of buying, because you'll end up creating a lot of visual noise that in itself affects the Scandinavian style you're trying to replicate.
Each object, furniture, and decorative elements must have a clear purpose.

2. Prefer the light and pastel tones

This doesn’t mean that you can't in any way paint a wall in a darker shade, for example (or choose a piece of furniture of the same shade). Still, that shouldn't be the most applied rule if you want to decorate your living room in the Scandinavian style.

The preference should be for light and pastel tones, which more easily bring harmony to space, giving it a feeling of greater amplitude. You can complement this with darker elements that contrast well with the environment you want to create, but be aware of the exaggeration of colors and materials, something you should avoid.

Another advantage of using the lighter shades is that it guarantees greater luminosity to the room, one of the main characteristics of the Scandinavian style. In this way, it manages to recreate a lighter environment.

3. Don't forget about nature

Bring some natural elements inside. You don't have to choose real plants or flowers if you don't want to (or can) keep them, not least because you can always choose false plants/flowers that can guarantee the same visuals.

Once again, it’s important that you don’t forget, at any time, to give preference to minimalism. Don’t exaggerate the natural elements that you choose for your living room. Choose strategic places instead, where you can place plants/flowers in a discreet way and that, above all, doesn’t affect the functionality and organization of the room.

4. The white color and the wood elements

It’s not new: the combination of white and wood is one of the most classic and also one of the most chosen over time. Wood is a material that complements very well a space painted in white, as is the case with most Scandinavian living rooms.

If this is an idea that pleases you, prefer the application of lighter woods rather than dark ones, because only then can you preserve the harmony that you so much seek. Of course, in this case, you don't need to apply wood only to furniture, such as shelves or support furniture. You can (and should) choose decorative elements in raffia, for example, or even blankets/cushions in brown tones that you can put on the white sofa.

5. The pastel tones

Whatever color you like best, their pastel "version" will certainly work best in the living room you want to decorate in the Scandinavian style. The truth is that we didn’t save this tip for the end for no apparent reason quite the contrary since it should be applied in addition to those mentioned above.

With this, we want to explain that the pastel tones match very well with a room decorated in light tones, like white. Likewise, these shades also create a unique connection with the woody tones that you have chosen to decorate your space, and also with the minimalism with which you have guided all your decisions.

When you start decorating your living room in the Scandinavian style, don't forget: "less is more". It’s better to opt for the simplest furniture and decorative elements instead of robust ones, which compromise the tranquility you so much seek.
