Industrial style: sophisticated and rustic in a unique style

Industrial style: sophisticated and rustic in a unique style

You don't need to go that back in time to meet the Industrial Age and to those that were its most pronounced characteristics the warm tones, the woods, and bricks are some of the best known.

One of the places where the industrial style was most practiced was in New York, something that served as inspiration, and that was repeated around the world. Of course, at the time it was never thought that a certain Age would inspire a trend in interior design but the truth is that this is precisely what happened and it has lasted until today.

As in fashion, interior design trends are also cyclical. The colors that were used, the objects and types of furniture that were fashionable dozens of years ago, frequently make a comeback without notice.

The industrial style has kept its identity intact to this day, characterized by an appearance that seems unfinished, but that is completed through different decorative elements. Get to know better how sophisticated and rustic notes built the distinctive features of industrial style.

1. Cement and concrete

These are two of the most commonly used materials in industrial style. We know that, by now, you must be thinking about the exterior of a building, but the truth is that this is a trend that also applies itself to the inside of a house, which highly benefits from this form of interior design, which is so original.

It’s therefore very common to see cement, in orange tones, applied to interior walls, and the same happens with concrete. This is a very common tendency, especially in a single wall of a room, leaving the rest painted in complementary tones.

2. The bricks

Did you ever think about having a brick wall in a room? If that's an idea that's crossed your mind, know that it's characteristic of industrial style.

Of course, we're not talking about that typical brick, often used to build walls, but a smaller one, in warmer shades. This is a technique that, when well applied, is very well complimented with objects such as floor lamps in dark tones (in black, for example).

3. The lighting

And, speaking of lamps, here's another strong feature of the industrial style: the various types of lighting used in one room. One of the most common practices of this decoration trend is, in fact, the choice of different lighting sources such as table lamps, hanging lamps, and even the most modern candelabras.

4. Wide windows and high doors

The inclusion of windows and doors in industrial style is thought through in detail, as only the tallest and widest are used. This design must be maintained and respected to the maximum since both are an element capable of completely changing the decoration of a room. The frames should be made of steel, or other darker material, and everything else made of glass (even the doors).

5. Integrated spaces

One of the main characteristics of the industrial style is the integration of spaces, i.e., the absence of partition walls from one space to another (from the kitchen to the living room, for example). The amount of space is the key element in this decorative trend and asks that the displacement be done freely and not limiting, therefore, any room.

The truth is that, nowadays, it is very common not to have a partition between the kitchen and the living room, another factor that proves that this style is back to stay. In terms of furniture, the preference goes for dark materials, especially leather, which complements common spaces such as the living room this sofa is a great example of this.

6. Exposed wires and pipes

It may seem almost impossible and even very unsightly, but the truth is that there is nothing that better identifies the industrial style as light installations and exposed water pipes.

If this is something you would like to do in your own home, choose to paint everything that is exposed in black. You will quickly realize how original and "out of the box" the decoration of your space is.

7. Furniture and appliances in sturdy materials

Think of furniture and household appliances in materials such as steel, solid wood or iron, because those are the main ones used in industrial style decoration. This does not mean that you should opt for only one "line" of furniture, this is because you can also opt for vintage pieces (like this sideboard furniture).

Whatever industrial style feature you like the most, or want to replicate in your home, make sure you always opt for robust materials and warm tones. Also, give preference to large spaces and opt for a diverse and original decoration.
