7 tips for organizing the closet

It's time to clean the closet, and you don't know where to start? Point out these tips and organize your closet once and for all.

You're making a mistake when you think you need to have your room to call "closet" because these tips even help those who have only one cabinet to store clothes, shoes, and wallets.

It is true that, nowadays, many divisions assume themselves as closets due to the most recent modern decoration, which introduced this concept.

Point out these tips to organize the closet and make sure you'll never find a piece of clothing out of place again.

1. Unpacking to tidy up

It's a contradiction, we know, but you must gather all the pieces of clothing and footwear you have in one space—it can be in the middle of the bed, on the sofa, or even on the floor.

You must have a clear notion of how many pieces you have in your closet so that you can later define the destination of each group of clothes, shoes, and wallets.

2. Do not keep what you do not use

This is one of the most challenging tips to follow, but believe us, it's no use keeping parts you don't use. This is the perfect time to throw away what is somehow damaged and donate what you don't use to clear space that you will certainly need to organize the closet.

3. Start by categorizing

Organization and minimalism are fundamental in this phase a much-followed principle, for example, in the Scandinavian style of interior decoration. The categorization of clothes/footwear/wallets will help you to visualize better everything you have.

Start by categorizing the different clothing pieces you have: pants, t-shirts, blouses, shirts, coats, dresses. Choose a space in the closet to store each of these "categories" of clothing.

Do not mix shirts with dresses, for example, or any other group of clothes. Take care to store each "group" uniquely, so that when you open a drawer looking for t-shirts, you won't find a pair of pants.

4. The difference between folding and hanging

When categorizing each piece of clothing, follow this fundamental rule: fold the heaviest clothes (such as the thickest sweaters) and hang the lightest (such as blouses or shirts).

Organizing your closet in this way guarantees two different things: that you won't wrinkle or crease the lighter pieces and that you won't damage the closet structure by hanging heavier clothes.

Still, be careful how you fold the clothes because it is frequent that you end up stacking several pieces and that some of them end up falling to the back of the closet—something that you can avoid with proper organization and care.

5. Organize the closet according to the season

If we are in summer, it is unlikely that you will wear that woolen shirt that you have stored in your drawer. Therefore, you should organize your closet more than once (a year) to segment the clothes you wear and those you don't wear in each season.

Keep the clothes that you are not wearing at a particular time in boxes labeled, so when you put them back in the closet, you know where each of the different pieces is.

6. Use the same hangers

Believe us: there is a big difference between organizing the closet with different hangers or all the same—even if it's only for the satisfaction you'll feel when you see that, with all hangers the same, everything seems cleaner and more organized.

7. Shoes and wallets

Do not organize your shoes in the first way that comes to your mind. Be aware of the free space you still have and prefer shelves. It would be best to organize the shoes according to categories: boots, high heels, sneakers, sandals, slippers, shoes.

Don't mix everything and keep shoes arranged by groups, facilitating access, and improving the overall organization.

In this case, you should organize your shoes according to the season you can store away your winter boots during the summer months.

Adopt the same logic for the wallets. You can organize them on separate shelves and rows. Leave the larger ones at the back and the smaller ones at the front.

Even if you don't have an entire room destined for the closet, these are tips that you can adopt even when you have the closet in the bedroom where you can, and should, use colors to improve the room's decoration.

Organizing the closet can be difficult at first, but as you follow these tips, you end up liking what you are doing. The truth is that this is a way to keep everything organized for longer.

By having the work of organizing all your clothes, wallets, and shoes, you end up wanting to preserve that sense of tidiness for longer. By doing so, you’ll think twice about where you're going to put a piece of clothing next time.
